Rofina Yasmin Othman

Talk Title : Microbial technologies and the future of agriculture

Dr. Yasmin was a Chevening scholar and received a PhD in Plant Virology from the University of East Anglia U.K. in 1994, and prior to this an MSc from Universiti Malaya in 1990 and her first degree in microbiology from the University of Surrey in 1984. She has served University of Malaya as an academic since 1990. Her last portfolio was as Associate Vice Chancellor (Industry and community linkages) which covered the coordination of units, centres and activities involved with industry and community across campus. She is committed to building an innovative ecosystem that will accelerate the scaling of the University’s R&D outputs through to their application to society; provide solutions to industry and open opportunities for high technology investment. She is also an advocate of the concept of the University as an integral part of the community. Currently she is attached to the office of industry and community engagement as an expert. As an academic, she heads an active Biomolecular research group with the Centre of Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (CEBAR), publishing actively with a H-index of 20, filing more than 10 patents and graduating more than 50 PhD and MSc students. She has been a professor teaching microbiology and biotechnology at the Institute of Biological Sciences, helping to develop new curriculum in molecular virology, bioinformatics and bioethics among others. She is also a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Yasmin brings with her a wealth of experience including almost four years as undersecretary of the National Biotechnology Directorate at the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation Malaysia (2009 – 2012). She has sat on MIDA Investment Advisory Committees for the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Industries and Agensi Inovasi Malaysia committee on Intellectual Capital. She is active in issues relating to biosafety and biopolicies and was a two term a member of the National Biosafety Board. Currently she is actively involved with several Academy of Sciences initiatives among which are the Steering Committees of the I-Connect programme and the ASM Science Outlook Report 2020. She is also on the technical committees for the National Biotechnology Policy Impact study and the National Vaccine Roadmap MOSTI. She has sat on the Board of University of Malaya (2018-2021) and was a member of the University’s Senate. She sits on the boards of UM subsidiaries UMCapital Bhd, UM Innovations Sdn Bhd and UM Plantations Sdn Bhd. She is currently a board member of Xeraya Capital Sdn Bhd and MIF Investments Bhd and prior to this she has sat on the Boards of the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC), The National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM) and MARDI. She was the founding vice president of ITMA, the Innovation Technology Managers Association Malaysia and is a member of AUTM, the international Association of University Technology Managers.
